Word problems and proportions
I can work through simple situations that involve direct proportion when unknown quantities are simple multiples of known quantities (e.g. A ‘cup cakes’ recipe uses 2 eggs to make 10 cupcakes. How many eggs will be needed to make 25 cupcakes?

Resources provided

  • Compilation of short videos taken from the European Space Agency and Euronews space TV programmes to provide context for the word problems
  • Printable worksheet with space themed problems
  • Kahoot like quiz to be used in class

Suggested Activities

  1. Start the lesson by explaining word problems and proportions in general and explain that today the students will help to solve space related problems
  2. Use the printed worksheet to do some of the word problems together (focus on 3-4 key worksheet questions)
  3. Set the remaining questions as homework to consolidate learning
  4. Use Kahoot as a closing activity for quick formative assessment
  5. Use the presentation as visual scaffolding to support learning, rather than as a standalone segment
