Resource Guide
CONCEPT FOCUS:
Using the ESA Ariane6 Rocket to Explore Fractions
The topic encourages working through simple mathematical fractions using situations related to space.
Learning Outcomes
Outcome 5.1.14
Fractions. Understanding and identifying fractions and equivalent fractions through real-life application. I can recognise and name equivalent fractions of a given fraction (with denominator up to 12) is the LO Other LOs that can be addressed are I can find fraction of a number I can compare and order unit fractions up to 1/12 and position them on a number line ( put in order).
Resources provided
- Compilation of short videos and images taken from the European Space Agency to provide context for the fraction problems
- Printable worksheet with space themed problems
- Printable rocket diagram for measurement and labelling
Suggested Activities
- Start the lesson by watching the introductory slides and fractions explain that today the students will help to solve space related fractions
- Use the printed worksheet to do some of the fraction problems together (focus on 2-3 key worksheet questions)
- Set the remaining questions as additional exercises for later to consolidate learning
Cross-curricular links
- Science (Forces & Motion): Understanding how different rocket parts contribute to movement and separation.
- English (Vocabulary): Naming and describing the parts of the rocket; building space-related vocabulary.
