CONCEPT FOCUS:

Exploring Our Solar System and the Scientists Behind the Discoveries - Planet Passport Booklet

Students will create a personalised passport-style booklet to learn about each of the different planets in our solar system.

I can research characteristics of each planet, namely the order of the planets from the sun; whether they are made of rock or gas; whether they support life or not; relative size to Earth; presence of rings.

Resources provided

  • Passport booklet with blank pages
  • Fact sheets on planets

Suggested Activities

  1. Hand out a blank passport booklet to each student.
  2. Explain to students that today each of them are going to imagine being astronauts and that they will be visiting each of the eight planets of our solar system and more.
  3. Place fact sheets about different planets on different tables or at different stations around the classroom. 
  4. Divide students into groups and each group will be ‘visiting’ one planet at a time, by going around the class to each point where a fact sheet has been placed.
  5. At each ‘planet’ they will fill in their booklet and take notes of what they learn.
  6. Leave extra time in the lesson for students to draw the planets, and if time runs out assign finishing the passport as homework.
