CONCEPT FOCUS:

Mediterranean Sea Conditions and Satellite Monitoring

Through this topic, pupils explore how satellites help people monitor sea conditions in the Mediterranean. They observe and compare information about sea temperature, salinity, and waves, and discuss why this information is useful for people such as fishers, sailors, scientists, and those who monitor the environment.

Learning Outcomes

Thematic Area Ġ6.1
The Mediterranean

Resources provided

  • Teacher link to the Copernicus My Ocean Learn (Beginner) visualisation platform
  • Examples may include the Mediterranean Sea, sea temperature, salinity, waves, satellite monitoring, fishers, sailors, weather observation, and environmental monitoring.

Suggested Activities

  1. Start the lesson by talking about the Mediterranean and asking pupils what they already know about it. Encourage them to think about where it is, which countries are around it, and why it is important for people living nearby.
  2. Explain that satellites can help people monitor the sea from space. Introduce the idea that scientists and other users can study information such as sea temperature, salinity, and waves to better understand what is happening in the Mediterranean.
  3. Conduct a short guided viewing from the Copernicus My Ocean Learn platform. Keep the viewing focused on a small number of clear examples rather than open exploration. Ask pupils to look carefully at what they notice in the Mediterranean and compare it with another sea or sea area shown.
  4. Guide discussion using structured prompting questions. Ask pupils what looks warmer or cooler, where the sea may appear calmer or rougher, and whether some areas seem different from others. Encourage them to compare the Mediterranean with another sea and think about why these differences may matter.
  5. Give pupils the worksheet and ask them to record what they observe about temperature, salinity, and waves. Support them in writing short comparison statements and simple explanations about why this information is useful.
  6. Conclude with a class discussion on how satellite monitoring can help people. This may include helping fishers and sailors prepare for sea conditions, helping scientists study the environment, and helping people understand changes in the sea over time.

Cross-curricular links

  • Science, English / Maltese and Geography-related observation skills (Year 6)
    • Pupils observe patterns, compare visual information, and discuss findings using topic vocabulary. The worksheet supports recording, comparison, and simple interpretation of evidence.
    • Class discussion and guided comparison support speaking, listening, explanation, and the development of subject vocabulary.
